IWCSW Charter Day Celebration
Charter Day for the club was celebrated with a sumptuous buffet of food brought by the 19 members who attended and a very interesting and moving talk given by Dr Lim Hong Huay, the founder of Caring SG.
She enlightened us on why and how she founded this organisation, which provides much needed help to caregivers of special needs children. As a mother of autistic children herself, she was moved to find ways to give caregivers the respite they need from the very demanding physical and mental strain exerted on them in caring for such children. Together with her team, many of whom are also parents of special needs children, she has built an inclusive community for these families, through synergetic partnerships with professionals and public stakeholders.
Her talk made a great impression on members present. Possible ways in which the club can collaborate with this very worthwhile organisation will be discussed at the next IWCSW committee meeting.

TAKE ONE!
Eighteen children plus their mothers mesmerised by the cartoon!!
The Peranakan restaurant in Lengkok Bahru was transformed into a movie theatre on the afternoon of 4th September to give single parents and their children an experience they will not forget in a long time. Eighteen children, who rarely get to visit a cinema, were treated to the screening of a cartoon complete with popcorn and snacks donated by volunteers.
The afternoon was made complete by games and activities conducted by club member Claudia, doing a marvellous job engaging the children in brain teasers that they all enthusiastically participated in!
The event was a resounding success! It’s the first time according to Chua Siew Ling who organised it that these families have had such a treat! The children’s obvious enjoyment made a great impact on those present. Another movie treat will definitely feature in the club’s future calendar of events!

MUSIC PLEASE!
A generous initiative on behalf of an IWC Singapore West member has resulted in St Lukes’s Elder Care now boasting a 12 piece ukulele band to play for its senior residents.
Encouraged by Pastor Ban, and Inspired by fellow club member, Nany, who is a seasoned ukelele player at the centre, Lucia Goh kindly sponsored the ukeleles, to celebrate her 50th wedding anniversary! She also took the initiative to add IWCSW’s logo on the ukeleles to promote awareness of the club.
Two goals in one were thus accomplished…Lucia helped Pastor Ban achieve his goal of having a Band ready to play for future church occasions and the club now has a free advertisement whenever a ukelele is played in the future!
POTTERS AT WORK!
Throwing pots is no easy task for adults let alone children! But young children, aged between seven and twelve mastered the art in little under two hours organised by two club members recently!
Twenty eight children from the Shine agency in Bukit Merah, who were keen to try their hand at being mini potters for the afternoon, were split into two groups to attend sessions on either 31 August or 7 September at a pottery studio in Toa Payoh.
Together with club members, Siew Ling and Aleen, and Shine personnel, the children were bussed to the studio where professional potters supervised them in producing pots based on the theme of friendship, and later guided them in selecting the glazes for the pieces they made.
The afternoon ended with complimentary McDonalds meals being served to the children and volunteers, followed by games and activities their Experienced Leaders conducted for them.
Once fired, the pots will be delivered to Shine for distribution to the children…a memento of a really happy and productive day, made possible by the combined efforts of the club’s members and McDonalds who kindly sponsored both events!
Seeing the positive impact this event had on the children, will undoubtedly spur club members to organise more in the future.
